Monthly Highlights : April 2024

The fingerstyle summary of the month of April 2024.

The principle of the summary of the month type of article is to give you, in a chronological order, all the new worthy releases in the fingerstyle world (and sometimes a bit beyond). This is made that way so you can explore by yourself our selections, if you don’t have the time to wander through this musical journey, and want to only concentrate on the best of the best, please go see the Top of the Month kind of articles.

Enjoy !

弦上翻花, 【指弹吉他】ダンスホール(舞厅). 01/04/2024

Let’s start the month with a sympathic and enthusiat play to get in the bath !

Thomas Zwijsen, Pink Floyd – Another Brick in The Wall. 02/04/2024

At this point, this is quite hard to not put Thomas’s guitar plays in the highlights at least. The play is clean as usual thanks to Thomas complete control. It got some Spanish vibes at some points with the chords strikes, but difficult to stick to the original sound on a classical guitar and in fingerstyle, so I guess it comes as a natural choice to play it like this. Arpeggios are also on perfect point, as usual.

Lucas Brar, Mozart – Lacrimosa (jazz version). 03/04/2024

Once again, Lucas is covering a song turning it into a jazzy piece. Well, I feel quite far from Lacrimosa in some parts, but let’s enjoy the Jazz anyway !

The Album Tripliciti by Tripliciti is out. 04/04/2024

For a bit of context if you are new here, Tripliciti is a trio composed by 3 world class fingerstyle guitarists, which are Andy McKee, Calum Graham, and Trevor Gordon Hall. They united to produce this album. They have an insane harmony, in the way that they REALLY are working together, and they don’t try at all to have glory moments individually through solos. That to say, it’s not a jam session quality, it is much more ; it is a refined and polished work.

This collab made to me a super important work in the fingerstyle universe. It’s true that generally when fingerstyle players are making collab, they like to make insane things, they like to be noticed with very cool stuff. And I love it. Nonetheless, having 3 world class fingerstyle guitarists making a collab in the way Tripliciti did, with that much polishing and attention to the details, is something that is not that common and that I hope will open doors in the fingerstyle music for the future. They also each import their skills in their prefeired instrument (you’ll find electric guitar, Kalimbatar,…). The last song of the album, “Ursa Major”, is a tribute to Michael Hedges. Enjoy, relax, and prepare to go on a tiny journey.

You can find their album on Spotify, or also on Youtube starting with this song, if you do a bit of researches (everything’s not on Andy’s Channel).

John McLaren, Nightlight. 04/04/2024

A fingerstyle riff repeated and declined in several ways. But definitely a good one.

Charles Berthoud & Giacomo Turra, Slapocalypse. 05/04/2024

As the title suggests, you’ll have here lots of bass slapping. The whole is made in a funky tone.

Jin San Kim 김진산, Spy. 07/04/2024

Jin’s coming back strongly. He reached a level that can be placed among the best, and for now got the consistancy with it. He is elevating himself among the very best.

Live. Ewan Dobson, Time v3.0. 08/04/2024

Usually, I avoid to put lives, mostly because it would be too much work, unless they bring something specific to the music. Here is Ewan playing the third version of his famous serie “Time”, under an eclipse. The recording sound is not from the best quality, but it is poetic.

Yuri Polezhaev, Fire and Steel. 09/04/2024

A solid composition both on technical and melodic part. Good job.

Eiro Nareth, Brad Fiedel – Terminator Theme. 09/04/2024

A slow, and well rounded fingerstyle cover of th Terminator Theme, made on a 12 strings guitar. It is a pleasant time to listen. The introduction of the percussions is smart and well executed.

Mark Knopfler, One Deep River (Full Album) 12/04/2024

We already discussed some of the songs of this album in the past months. Here is the full album.

Sungha Jung, IU – Love Wins All. 13/04/2024

A clean controlled play, with the light touch that Sungha puts in his works.

JackYang 楊楚驍 , 【指弹吉他】高能泛音版《悬溺》 前奏神还原!(chinese title, the original song is an instrumental song called “Drowning”). 14/04/2024

A sympathic tone and play of the song, making it a better cover overall than the recent version from Igor Presniakov.

Giovanni Baglioni, L’insonne. 15/04/2024

This compoisition is brillant. It’s not a technical masterpiece, but the melody is highly enjoyable. Now technically speaking, this is a reupload from CandyRat Records made 9 months ago. But he has quite low self visibility on internet, and considering the quality of his work, he deserves more recognition. You can also find albums from him on Spotify that he didn’t show on Youtube, and it worth the research.

Charles Berthoud, RHCP – Under The Bridge. 18/04/2024

Like Thomas Zwijsen, it’s quite hard to not put Charles work in the highlights at least. Consistancy and hard work + talent. Under The Bridge, a personnal favourite from RHCP performed on a fretless bass. I think the choice of fretless bass was a good idea, just a bit disappointed to not have the full song on it.

墨韵 Moyun, Luis Fonsi – Despacito. 19/04/2024

Let’s get this right off the bath. I don’t like Despacito. But Moyun is a sort of fingerstyle angel, that can turn the dislike into super enjoyable. For those who are new year, she plays the guzheng (a traditional Chinese zither). And she is an uncontestable master of fingerstyle, proof in video (once again).

Jimmy O’Hare, Ain’t Nobody. 19/04/2024

A composition that tries to add some difficult and creative parts. It displays a hard work and this is appreciable, got some really nice movements.

Thomas Zwijsen, Iron Maiden – Wasted Years. 20/04/2024

Yes, all Thomas works will end up here. The covers with Wiki Violin are definitely worth it, she is an awesome musician as well. It’s good to see Thomas back in a mountain like landscape with the dogs.

Ivan Zakharenko, George Michael – Careless Whispers. 20/04/2024

This one will probably talk more to intermediate level players. The vibrato control and the slides are good.

Jamie Dupuis, Transcendance (meditative instumental guitar). 21/04/2024

Often the meditative instrumentals can be boring. Here it is not the case. And it does very well it’s calming job (plus bonnus for the beach framework). For those who don’t know Jamie, he works a lot with harp-guitar like in this play.

Andrew York, The Dancer. 22/04/2024

All aboard for a classy little jazzy journey on classical guitar. There is a very interesting flow coming out of this composition. It’s technically not new, but we have a live, and not much new songs came out this month, so it’s a good thing than to dig for old pals that are coming outside for a live.

Eddie Van Der Meer & Casper Esmann, Filthy!. 22/04/2024

That’s great to see the 2 of them united to display a song. They are 2 great guitarists. This is the channel of Eddie, but I encourage you to check Casper’s channel too.

Muriel Anderson, Rainy Harbor. 23/04/2024

Muriel uses her harp-guitar here. And it’s quite amazing how she really makes it sounds like rain. The title fits the content !

Thomas Zwijsen, Toto – Africa. 25/04/2024

I want to be the best, every month of my life from now on” ; Thomas, probably,…

Jokes apart, it’s big Thomas quality again. The level of details is slightly higher than his other works from this month. Also covering an excellent song itself. The passage from 2:40 to 3:05 is a display of volum changing in a subtle and refined way (the moment at 2:52 is extremely pleasant).

Adrian Bellue, Mischa. 26/04/2024

It’s good to have Adrian back. He is an incredible composer, and he showed that he is still in the game.

Jamie Dupuis, The Doors – Riders on the Storm. 26/04/2024

This piece differs a bit from the other pieces of Jamie, for it got the electric guitar effect on his harp-guitar. But it’s going very well with the original song vibes, and it’s making a way better sound than can be expected, putting it as a very pleasant track to hear, even without knowing the original song.

Mike Dawes and Periphery, Scarlett + It’s only Smiles. 26/04/2024

Now the day’s about to get into a singing mood. This is a Mike Dawes collab with Periphery for 2 songs.

Sari Seramor and Estas Tonne, Cura Medicina. 26/04/2024

Let’s continue the singing part of the day by some reggae vibes accompanied by Estas.

Yamandu Costa, Missionerita. 27/04/2024

Once again, an old gem comming out for a live.

George Nash, Orange. 27/04/2024

A pleasant composition, that has a progression well rounded.

Mateus Asato, Bee-Gees – How Deep is your Love… 29/04/2024

For an electric guitar, the play is super clean. Mainly it’s played with a pick, but also some other fingers are involved to complexify the play.

Philippe Graulty, Amboy. 29/04/2024

Once in a while, it feels nice to listen to very calm classical new pieces. I didn’t put any in this month yet, so let’s discover this artist through his classical guitar chill creation.
